RE: School me about Class C RV tires!

Do a quick search on this topic and you will find LOTS of responses, each with their own opinion. At the very least you want each set of duals to match. Replacing one dual and mating it with a used tire may mean that their circumferences will not match and could result in one or the other carrying more load. Another issue with tires is their age. You didn't say how old your RV or tires are, but if they are more than seven (some would say five) years old you should seriously consider replacing them. Most Class C's use Load Range E tires. I have had my share of tire problems so that is one area I suggest you be cautious with. Good Luck, Len

Cooper Tire Failures

I just read a previous post on Cooper tire failures on a TT. I have a 30' Class C and have had two Mastercraft (made by Cooper) and one Cooper tire lose there tread over the past year. The Mastercrafts had approx. 15000 miles on them and the Cooper only around 5000. No one can offer an explanation other than "it happens". The tires were inflated to 80 psi as recommended by Cooper and the RV was properly loaded with equal weight distribution and it was weighed and came in under the GVWR of 14050, which is well below the tire ratings. We "were" currently on a two month trip to the Southwest but are currently on our way home as we just don't have any confidence in the remaining tires to survive the trip. We'll keep you posted as to any future events on the return trip. Len PS We replaced the Cooper (and it's partner on the right rear duals) with TOYO tires for the return trip as they were the only thing available in the small town we limped to.

Unfortunately it sounds like she was not wearing a seat belt either.

RE: vent rattle down the road

Yeah, I missed that part too! There is a flap on the outside of the older models & that is where the "tabs" would be, which is where I placed the velcro. Viewing your photo, that looks like a very different/newer style vent than mine. Len

RE: vent rattle down the road

I had the same problem and the tabs just don't work. Got some self adhesive velcro and it has stayed shut for the past year. Don't forget to open if you want to use the vent for cooking, but we rarely find it necessary. Len

RE: What size jack for a 30' Class C?

Thanks for the responses. Not sure where I will purchase but it looks like a 12 ton bottle jack is the way to go. Regarding the torque issue, I definitely will have any tire I change serviced asap. I have ERS but just want to have the ability to take care of things in an emergency. Thanks again to everyone for their responses. Len

What size jack for a 30' Class C?

Last week I had a valve stem blow out almost in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately I had a cell phone signal and was able to get road service to put the spare on. We will be going on an extended trip in another month that will take us through many areas with no phone coverage, etc. I want to have a jack with me in the event there is a tire problem where we can't find help. My question is, what type and size (5 ton, 7 ton, etc.) of jack would you recommend? I have a 30' Class C, 14050 GVWR. Incidentally, I had all of the valve stems changed yesterday and the tech advised me that they were all of "car" quality and he was able to pull two of them out with his hands!!!

RE: what does this sticker mean?

I assume that you have a ladder to the roof attached at that point. That is what the sticker refers to.

RE: staying longer than 60 days

This is copied directly from the Alaska Drivers Manual. Good question as to work campers etc. but looks like they are in violation if they don't get an Alaska license after 90 days!!!??? WHO IS EXEMPT? 1. A non-resident who is at least 16 years of age, who has in their possession a valid driver’s license issued by another state or country. However, an Alaska driver’s license must be obtained by the end of a 90-day period after entry into the state.

RE: Help - Tire Pressure / Issue

The question that hasn't been asked, "is this your loaded weight?". Most Class C's loaded for a trip, to include passengers, etc. are close to their GVWR, which then requires that you run at a higher pressure. Every tire dealer that I have talked to recommends 80psi. I had two tire failures using Mastercraft Courser tires and the first thing that the Cooper tire rep asked was if I was running them at 80 psi for the load. I would recommend talking to a knowledgable truck/RV tire rep.

RE: US 26 N through AshevilleNC to I 81 N

Okay, first of all, yes it is through the mountains, but then every highway through western NC is through the mountains. However it is a good road and you will have no problems. We travel these roads with a 30' Class C pulling a Jeep with no problems. There are some steep spots that will require you to slow down and possibly use your 4 way flashers just like the trucks do but that is no big deal. For me personally this is much better than I 95, the Jersey turnpike etc. If you need info on the mountain roads pick up a copy of "Mountain Directory East", a guide for RV's and Truckers as to grades etc. Relax, you'll be fine.

RE: Florida Registration from Out Of State

Most states link drivers licenses with registrations. That might be the area that you need to look into first. Here in NC you have to obtain your drivers license before they allow you to register your vehicles. They do however have an exception for Motorhomes under some circumstances, so that might also work in FL. Good luck with it. Len

RE: oil additives

I am no expert on the subject but I have been told by someone who is supposed to know that the design of the engines currently in use is very different in the way they lubricate compared to the "old" days in that they rely on pressure through smaller lubrication ports hence the use of lighter weight oils. With this type of system additives can be harmful in that their viscosity is much higher and can limit or even block the lubrication ports. I have never confirmed this info with anyone else but would definitely look further before using any additives. I was a major fan of STP years ago.

RE: i40 from knoxville to asheville

We have used it with a 30' Class C towing a Jeep with no problems. It has a fair amount of truck traffic and is a little steep in some spots, but overall not any worse than any other routes through the mountains. I will be using it again in a few weeks (both directions) with no hesitation. Len

RE: Daytona Beach to Marion, NC

We have done it from St. Augustine to Hendersonville. Total road trip time (over 2 days, around 450 miles) approx. 11 hours including a few short rest stops. You could probably add about 2 more hours for the distance from Daytona to St. Aug and from Hendersonville to Marion but would probably do better than that as those legs are on Interstate.

RE: Daytona Beach to Marion, NC

If you just want the Interstates then use I-95 to I-26 to I-40. You can do that in one day. If you want to take your time and go through some small towns etc. use I-95 into Georgia and pick up US 25 around exit 36. It will take you on the "old route" toward Asheville. Stop at Magnolia Springs State Park in Georgia for your half way point. It's a slower route but we have used it many times and it is much less hectic than the Interstates.

RE: SS Badger from WI to MI

I just did a rough calculation for a 30' Motorhome, toad, and 2 Passengers it came to $332!!!!! Think I'll pass on that one.

RE: MS Streets & Trips 2008 w/GPS

Thanks once again. The price through Amazon is certainly reasonable and well worth it to not lose signals in critical areas. I think I will go with the whole package. Once again, thank you. Len
